Color & Visual Behavior (“Yurameku” Effect)

• The Yurameku line from Sailor is designed to produce color-shifting or dual-shading effects: the ink may show different hues as it dries, depending on nib, paper, ink flow, and density. 

• Kyokuya (meaning “polar night”) is a moody, multifaceted ink. 

  • In some conditions, it displays deep green / forest tones as a base. 

  • In wetter or more saturated areas, hints of violet, berry-purple, or muted blue may emerge. 

  • The color transitions are particularly strong on more absorbent or fountain-pen–friendly papers. 

• Shading & Sheen:

  • Offers noticeable shading (variation from light to dark within strokes) 

  • Some sheen or reflective edges may appear under certain lighting and paper conditions. 

  • No shimmer (i.e. no glitter particles) — the effect is from color shift rather than sparkle. 

Performance & Characteristics

• Flow / Lubrication: Smooth flow typical of Sailor inks. It is not specially “lubricated” but performs well in most pens. 

• Dry Time: Moderate — not marketed as ultra-fast, depends on paper and nib width. 

• Water Resistance: The ink is not water-resistant. Exposure to water will likely cause smudging or color bleeding.

• In some user tests, the ink’s base tone leans toward a muted forest green with brown undertones, while highlights may show purple or violet. 

• Some users mention that on certain papers or in fine nibs, the lighter side of the shade may appear a bit faint, so broader / wetter nibs or more absorbent paper help bring out the nuance. 

• The color?changing effect is more immediately visible on initial wet strokes and in pooling / thick ink areas.
