Sailor’s Ink Studio line is a curated collection of 100 distinct colors created via years of customer feedback, color?mixing sessions, and blending experiments. 
The “224” variant was among three new shades added in August 2020 (alongside 252 and 280). 
224 is categorized in the grey / neutral family, but is not a simple neutral grey — it is designed to show multi-hue shading (green, purple, grey) depending on application and paper.

Color & Optical Behavior

• Base / Hue
   224’s base appears as a cool-toned grey but is best described as a shifting “grey?purple / blue / slightly green” ink depending on conditions. 

• Multi-Hue / Chromatic Shading
   One of its delights is that it exhibits green, purple, and grey tones as it shades or pools. 
   In smear / swab tests, the ink shows layering: green and purple separation in heavy application. 
   Edge shading / halos are noted in heavier strokes. 

• Saturation & Legibility
   224 is considered moderately saturated for a grey / shifting ink. It’s dark enough to remain legible in many contexts, though on lighter nibs or light flow, it may appear faint. 

• Drying, Water Resistance, & Behavior
   Dry time: ~ 10–15 seconds on premium papers, faster on office copy. 
   Water resistance: Low / none. The ink washes away, though interesting color effects may remain in diluted form. 
   Flow & behavior: The ink is not especially wet — paired pens are encouraged to bring out its full color shifts. 
   Ease of cleaning: High, typical of Sailor dye inks. 

Usage & User Experience

• Best nib / pen pairing
   Medium or wider, wetter pens help reveal the full shift and color depth. In drier or finer nibs, the color may appear flat. 

• Paper choice
   High-quality, low-absorption papers (Tomoe River, Rhodia, etc.) help preserve the shifting and reduce smearing or feathering. 

• Community observations
   Some users report that the ink can appear paler than expected in lighter pens, and that strong shading / color separation becomes more obvious when applying more ink. 
   One reviewer said it felt “very thin and dry” in certain pens, though the shading and color effects make it uniquely attractive. 
   In forums, 224 is described as a multi?hue grey that can lean more blue, green, or pink depending on lighting and pen.
