Sailor Standard Converter (Purple) 14-0506-250

Sailor Standard Ink Converter — Purple Knob (Model 14?0506?250)
— for Sailor fountain pens (cartridge/converter type)

Overview & Purpose

This converter is designed to allow you to use bottled fountain pen ink in place of cartridges in many Sailor pens. The “Standard” converter fits most Sailor fountain pens (except some special models like the Chalana) and enables you to draw ink from a bottle, giving you much more ink?capacity flexibility and a wider choice of ink colors.

The “purple” designation refers to the color of the knob (the twisting piston end), which is one among several vibrant color options Sailor offers to coordinate with pens or inks.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Piston / twist?mechanism: You fill the converter by twisting the knob (piston action) to draw ink into the reservoir.

  • Clear body: The converter barrel is transparent (clear), allowing you to see the ink level, see air bubbles, and monitor flow.

  • Vibrant knob color (purple): The knob color is customizable; here it’s purple, so it can match or contrast with your pen or ink for aesthetic flair.

  • Proprietary size: It uses Sailor’s proprietary converter dimensions, so it fits in Sailor pens that support converters (i.e. those that also accept Sailor cartridges).

  • Compact & lightweight: Dimensions are φ7.5 × 69 mm, with a weight around 2.8?g.

  • Standard packaging: Comes in a paper + plastic package (approx. size 40 × 8.5 × 120?mm) as per Sailor’s official product listing.

Usage & Tips

  • Filling: Submerge the tip in ink, twist the knob to retract the piston and draw ink in. Ensure there are no air bubbles.

  • Priming: After filling, gently twist and expel a small amount of ink, then draw again, to ensure the feed and nib are primed.

  • Cleaning: Rinse thoroughly whenever changing ink. Disassemble partially if possible (but be careful—some users report converters can come apart)

  • Watch for leaks: Some users report “sweating” or leaks at the joint between converter and pen section, especially with thinner inks or after disassembly.

  • Capacity limitation: The converter holds a modest volume, so with wetter nibs or long writing sessions you may find yourself refilling frequently. Some users note that the capacity seems lower than what cartridges might offer.

  • Secure seating: Make sure the converter is firmly seated into the pen section—if loose, it can detach or leak. Several users reported the converter coming apart or being dislodged in use.

Considerations & Common Issues

  • Durability of construction: Though many users are satisfied, a few report that converters occasionally disassemble internally or leak, so it’s good to have a spare.

  • Limited capacity: For long writing sessions, the ~0.5?mL capacity may require more frequent refills than with cartridges or larger piston fillers.

  • Compatibility: This is not a universal converter—brands like Pilot or Pelikan use different dimensions. Even within Sailor, certain special models (like Chalana) are excluded.

  • Air management: Because the converter is a closed piston design, air bubbles or incomplete priming can disrupt flow. Take care while filling to avoid trapped air.

  • Color fading / aesthetic: The colored knob is decorative but may show scratches or wear over long term use—handle gently.

Product Information

The Sailor 14?0506 series is Sailor’s “Standard” ink converter line (piston/ twist mechanism), made to replace cartridges in Sailor pens so that you can use bottled ink. The “Purple” designation (–250) refers to the knob/handle color variant.

This converter is suitable for most Sailor cartridge/converter fountain pens (except certain models like the Chalana).

Usage Notes, Strengths & Limitations

Pros / Strengths:

  • The transparent body makes it easy to monitor ink levels.

  • The colored knob allows aesthetic matching with pens or inks.

  • The piston mechanism is relatively simple and reliable.

  • Being a proprietary size, it fits well with Sailor pens that accept converters.

Limitations / Common Issues:

  • Many users report that the Sailor standard converter has relatively low ink capacity, requiring frequent refills for wetter nibs or heavy use.

  • Some converters may leak or “sweat” at joints or when not seated snugly.

  • Because it’s proprietary, it doesn’t fit converters from other brands (and vice versa) — the sizing is distinct for Sailor.

  • In rare cases, the converter may partially disassemble internally if mishandled during cleaning.

  • When filling, care must be taken to avoid trapping air bubbles, which can disrupt ink flow.
