Sailor Hocoro Dip Pen (Orange - Brush) 27-0135-202

The Sailor Hocoro Dip Pen Orange is a unique and elegant writing instrument. The Sailor Hocoro dip pen allows you to enjoy a wide variety of fountain pen ink colors without the conventional messy fuss. The Hocoro is designed with ease in mind. After using, simply rinse the nib with water and wipe it dry, and you're ready to switch to the next ink color! The nibs are designed to be swapped and as such, the nib is easily detachable. Simply screw it on and off. It doesn't have a cap but that detachable nib is able to be reversed and stored inside the barrel of the pen. This dip pen features a brush tip that is perfect for expressive drawings and calligraphy, as well as making color swatches that show off your inks' shading and sheen. It is also compatible with the Sailor Hocoro nibs. This brush pen is a dip pen only. It does not store ink in the barrel and is not compatible with ink cartridges or fountain pen converters.

Sailor Pen Company is a well-known Japanese manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments, particularly fountain pens. The company was founded in 1911 by Kyugoro Sakata in Hiroshima, Japan. The company aimed to produce high-quality writing instruments to rival Western products. Sailor is famous for its nibs, many of which are handcrafted by skilled artisans. The company offers a wide range of nib sizes and styles, including specialized nibs like the Naginata Togi. Sailor Pen Company is a distinguished name in the world of fountain pens, celebrated for its dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and innovation.

The Sailor Hocoro Dip Pen (Orange – Brush) 27?0135?202 is a specialized dip pen created by Sailor, designed to let fountain-pen ink lovers experiment with a wide variety of ink colors easily. This model uses a brush-style nib, making it ideal not just for writing, but for expressive drawing, calligraphy, ink swatches, and artistic work.

Unlike conventional fountain pens, this is a dip pen only — it has no internal ink reservoir or cartridge system. You dip the brush nib into your ink, and after use, rinse it with water and wipe it dry.

Design & Aesthetics

  • Color / Finish: Transparent orange (clear/translucent orange resin)

  • Barrel material: Resin (specifically PC resin)

  • Nib type: Nylon brush tip (replaceable)

  • Detachable / Reversible nib: The nib unscrews and can be reversed for protected storage inside the barrel (since the pen lacks a conventional cap).

  • Barrel dimensions:

    • In use (nib extended): ~?10.7 mm diameter × 134.4 mm length

    • With nib stored: ~?10.7 mm × 123 mm

  • Weight: ~?6.7 g (pen only)

  • Packaging: Comes in a paperboard box sized 36×15×146 mm

Easy Cleaning & Ink Switching

One of the key appeals of the Hocoro is how easy it is to clean and switch inks. After writing or drawing with one color, simply rinse the brush nib under water, wipe it dry, and dip into your next ink.

To ensure ink trapped in the lower portions of the brush is cleaned, the barrel includes side holes for better rinsing flow.

Nib Tip Maintenance

If the brush tip becomes ragged or misaligned over time, you can restore it by dipping it into hot water (≈?60–80?°C) for 1–2 minutes and reshaping carefully.

Protection & Storage

Because there is no cap, the design allows the nib to be stored reversed inside the barrel, protecting the brush tip when not in use.

Interchangeable / Exchangeable Nibs

You can swap the nib for another compatible brush or fude nib in the Hocoro series.

  • Calligraphy & Brush Lettering: The brush nib allows line variation and expressive strokes.

  • Illustration & Sketching: Great for combining writing and drawing, especially with colored inks.

  • Ink Swatching & Testing: Ideal for testing shading, sheen, and properties of different fountain pen inks.

  • Artwork Effects: You can use it for washes, blending, and applying artistic ink effects.

  • Ink flexibility: Use any bottled ink you like (within reason) since you're dipping directly.

  • Ease of changing inks: No need to flush a pen or convert it — quick dip & rinse.

  • Creative freedom: Brush tip gives you expressive control over line width and flow.

  • Compact & clever design: The ability to protect the nib by storing it inside the barrel is clever for a capless dip pen.

  • No ink reservoir: You must frequently dip while writing; it does not carry ink internally.

  • Potential cracking: Some users report that the tail ends of Hocoro pens have cracked.

  • Nib / body wobble or slight looseness: Some users mention slight movement or “play” between nib and barrel.

  • Nib scratchiness / smoothing: Some users find certain nibs (e.g. fude style) scratchy at first and may smooth them using micro-mesh or gentle polishing.

  • Not a fountain pen substitute: Do not try to convert it into a fountain pen — it is explicitly a dip pen. Some users attempted to treat it like an eyedropper and had leakage issues.

The Sailor Hocoro Dip Pen (Orange – Brush) 27?0135?202 is a thoughtfully designed, flexible dip pen aimed at those who love fountain pen inks but want more creative freedom. With its brush-style nib, ease of cleaning, and clever storage mechanism, it bridges the gap between traditional dip pens and ink-loving fountain pen aficionados. While it has limitations (no reservoir, occasional durability complaints), for many users it becomes a fun and expressive tool in their writing or art toolkit.

Nib Storage & Protection

  • Since there is no cap, the nib can be reversed and stored inside the barrel to protect the brush tip.

  • If the brush tip becomes jagged or frayed, you can dip it in hot water (60?°C to 80?°C) for 1–2 minutes and reshape it.
