Design & Functional Highlights

Dip Pen Format with Fountain Pen Convenience

The Hocoro Fude is a dip pen that is designed to make use of fountain pen inks more conveniently. You dip the nib into an ink, write, then rinse and switch inks — no internal ink filling.

Fude Nib for Brush?Style Lines

The Fude nib (with its slight upward curve) allows for expressive, variable-width brush-like strokes depending on the angle. It is suited for calligraphic styles, lettering, or expressive scripts.

Modular & Replaceable Nibs

The nib is screw-mounted and removable. You can unscrew it to replace or swap it with other Hocoro nibs (fine, medium, 1.0mm, etc.).
When not in use, the nib can be reversed and stored inside the hollow barrel to protect the tip (since the pen lacks a traditional cap).

Hollow Barrel & Lightweight Construction

Because the barrel is hollow (and not designed to hold ink), the pen remains lightweight and comfortable to use for extended writing sessions.

Included Reservoir / Feed

Unlike some simpler dip pens, this Fude version includes a built-in reservoir or feed (ABS resin) behind the nib that holds extra ink, reducing how often you need to re-dip.

Usage & Behavior Notes

  • Ink Compatibility: Works with fountain?pen inks and many other water-based inks (though care is required with thicker / particulate inks). Users often test multiple inks.

  • Flow / Ink Usage: The reservoir helps with more sustained writing between dips, giving steadier flow compared to a plain dip nib.

  • Angle & Stroke Variation: The Fude nib shows width variation depending on the writing angle. Users describe it as giving brush-like transitions: wider at lower angles, thinner at steeper angles.

  • Scratchiness / Feedback: Some users have reported that the Fude version can feel scratchy or offer more feedback than expected, possibly due to small play / wobble in the removable nib unit.

  • Cleaning & Ink Changes: One of the benefits is ease of cleaning — you can rinse the nib and wipe it dry to switch inks.

  • Durability Caution: Some users report that the barrel / tail of Hocoro pens may develop cracks over time. > “All their tails have cracked in almost the exact same spot.”

  • Not Eyedropper: The pen is not designed to function as an eyedropper (i.e. filling the barrel with ink leads to leaks).

Design & Functional Features

  • The Hocoro Dip Pen Fude is designed to let you use bottled fountain pen ink (or other cleanable inks) in a dip pen format: dip the nib, write, rinse, wipe, and repeat.

  • Interchangeable nibs: The Fude nib is screw-mounted and can be removed or swapped for other Hocoro nibs (Fine, Medium, 1.0mm, etc.).

  • No cap: Instead, the barrel allows the nib to be reversed and stored inside the barrel for protection when not in use.

  • Hollow barrel: The barrel is hollow (not intended to hold ink) to keep the pen lightweight.

  • Feed / reservoir for Fude: The Fude version includes a small reservoir or feed behind the nib (ABS resin) to hold extra ink and reduce how often you must re?dip.

Writing Experience & Behavior

  • Fude nib effect: The Fude nib has an upturned tip shape, producing expressive strokes and variation depending on the writing angle (similar to Japanese brush calligraphy).

  • Ease of cleaning / switching inks: Because it’s a dip pen, switching inks is simple — rinse the nib with water, wipe dry, then dip into a new ink.

  • Scratchiness / feedback: Some users find the Fude nib scratchy or offering notable feedback. Some have smoothed the nib via micro?mesh or polishing to improve the feel.

  • Nib stability: A few users report slight movement or play between the nib unit and the barrel body, though often not severe enough to interfere with use.

  • Ink compatibility: Many users use it with fountain pen inks; some experiment with calligraphy / drawing inks (e.g. India, sumi) — but caution is advised (clean promptly) to avoid clogging or staining.

Known Issues & Practical Observations

  • Barrel cracking: Multiple users report that the tails / barrels of Hocoro pens may develop cracks over time, even with moderate usage. > “I bought three Sailor Hocoro dip pens … all of their tails have cracked in almost the exact same spot.”

  • Not suitable for eyedropper mode: Attempting to fill the barrel with ink leads to leakage (front and back). The design is meant purely for dipping, not internal filling.

  • Cleaning is vital: Because you may test inks often, it’s crucial to rinse and clean the nib and reservoir/feed promptly to avoid ink residue problems or clogging.
